Welcome to June!

Anthony with the girls: Courtney and Rachel
May has come and gone. Sad, maybe. But here comes June, and with it the start of a long season of great weather and summer vacation for you students out there!

Don't forget that June also brings Father's Day with it. Do something special this year, whether you're spending Father's Day with your dad or your kids, or both! It's Sunday, June 16th - save the date! I wonder what the girls have planned for Anthony this year?

Our featured battle of the month is the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, which took place on June 27th, 1964. For you fellow history nerds out there: Union commander William T. Sherman conducted a frontal assault on Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston, mistakenly thinking his troops were too thinly spread alongside Kennshaw Mountain defending the confederate supply connection in to Atlanta. The Union army lost about 3,000 men in the defeat. Head to the Civil War Trust page for more information.

More candy for the history buffs: Today was a big day both in World War II history and in Civil War history. In the Civil War, the battle of Cold Harbor commenced on June 1, 1864.  Exactly 77 years later in 1941, Crete, the last Allied stronghold in Greece, fell to the Germans. The following year, also on June 1st, news of the German death camps became public for the first time.

Enjoy this supply of history, and enjoy the start of the 2013 June even more!
